Most of us will not wear a t-shirt with a marijuana leaf on it, or one with a ‘half peace-sign’, lovingly known as ‘the finger’. Most of us.
Why not? Because the symbolize something we don’t stand for. I was listening to an expert on New Age and why it doesn’t go with Catholicism, and she explained why we shouldn’t practice yoga or reiki.
The truth is that yoga stretches are just that-stretches. Reiki is akin to laying on of hands, but with a twist-it tries to use life-force energies for healing, a definite no-no for Catholics.
But even if you just do yoga for the stretches, or try to line up reiki with Catholicism, as in substituting the Holy Spirit for the life force, the truth is that you don’t do these things in isolation. Most people don’t do yoga stretches at home, and most go to reiki centers for their sessions. This gives an impression to people that yoga and reiki are ok for Catholics, in fact, it may inspire others to do the same thing. In fact, some religious nuns are self-described reiki masters. And here is exactly the danger. The words of yoga, the words of reiki, tend to take us away from God, or to elevate us to the status of God. These forms of meditation are much like “the force” in Star Wars movies. It leads us to believing that God is a force that we can influence or control, and He’s not.
When we lay hands on people we pray, asking God for healing. It’s not the same thing as trying to influence or control God to heal the person.
Many things in today’s world are seemingly innocuous and innocent. Beware. Whenever we push boundaries this way, we run the risk of losing our immortal soul to Satan.
