Back in the 60’s the US Government enacted anti-discrimination laws which legislated that people could no longer discriminate against others on the basis of race, creed, color, sexual preference, etc. Did it actually do any good? I don’t think so. People may not be legally free to hate who they want, but they are certainly free inside their hearts to feel how they want for whatever reason they want. The government has enacted other social engineering projects that haven’t worked either. Certainly, it is wrong to hate anyone, if we’re really Christian, but for something so superficial as the color of their skin.
Legislation like that does nothing to solve the real problem, only to drive it deeper underground.
Abortion is the same way. Too many people are focused on making abortion illegal, which the other side rightly says will just make it more dangerous and drive it underground. What we really need to do is to change people’s hearts. If someone firmly believes in their heart that abortion is wrong (for whatever reason), then they are much less likely to have one. If people are taught that marriage is a sacred institution, that sex is the logical expression of love inside the marriage bond, that sex should be reserved for marriage; if people understood all that, there would be fewer pregnancies out of wedlock, fewer ‘inconvenient’ pregnancies, much less need for even the thought of abortion. Then we could deal with those that need them, for medical reasons, for reasons of rape or incest, etc.
We need, in general, to manage to the higher standard, rather than the lowest common denominator. While we don’t live in a perfect world, and some people, even when taught chastity, will still give in to desires of the flesh, we still should aim high. Treat people as humans, rather than animals. Educate them first, that chastity until marriage is to be desired, that marriage is between a man and a woman, that heterosexual is normal, and that family comes first. Also teach them that under the situations above, abortion is wrong.
This is the best way to limit abortions in America.
