Yoga, Reiki, Catholics, why not?

Most of us will not wear a t-shirt with a marijuana leaf on it, or one with a ‘half peace-sign’, lovingly known as ‘the finger’.  Most of us.

Why not? Because the symbolize something we don’t stand for.  I was listening to an expert on New Age and why it doesn’t go with Catholicism, and she explained why we shouldn’t practice yoga or reiki.

The truth is that yoga stretches are just that-stretches.  Reiki is akin to laying on of hands, but with a twist-it tries to use life-force energies for healing, a definite no-no for Catholics.

But even if you just do yoga for the stretches, or try to line up reiki with Catholicism, as in substituting the Holy Spirit for the life force, the truth is that you don’t do these things in isolation.  Most people don’t do yoga stretches at home, and most go to reiki centers for their sessions.  This gives an impression to people that yoga and reiki are ok for Catholics, in fact, it may inspire others to do the same thing.  In fact, some religious nuns are self-described reiki masters.  And here is exactly the danger.  The words of yoga, the words of reiki, tend to take us away from God, or to elevate us to the status of God.  These forms of meditation are much like “the force” in Star Wars movies.  It leads us to believing that God is a force that we can influence or control, and He’s not.

When we lay hands on people we pray, asking God for healing.  It’s not the same thing as trying to influence or control God to heal the person.

Many things in today’s world are seemingly innocuous and innocent.  Beware.  Whenever we push boundaries this way, we run the risk of losing our immortal soul to Satan.

  1. I’m much too lazy for Yoga and never even heard of Reiki! I guess I just stick to the simple things…silent prayer, meditating on God’s mysteries, etc. When I’m feeling up to it, I combine that with walking and I’m good to go!

  2. Lol! Any Reiki practitioner would tell you that Reiki is from God. And we don’t direct it, we just let it do its work without interference. I teach my students in fact to pray for the healing of the person on the table before they start. It’s surprising how much disinformation there is out there about Reiki, as well as fear of it. Don’t take anyone else’s opinion as your own. Try it first, then make a judgement for yourself.

  3. Whether you agree or not, the Catholic Church has stated otherwise, and that’s all I really need.

  4. As a former reiki practitioner, I can tell you, reiki and yoga almost go hand in hand. The music, the meditation, the false gods you call upon whether your doing body stretches or hand motions. I have never been a person that will just ‘do as I am told’ so I did what I felt. And I paid a very dear consequence for it. Everyone should be aware of how big of a danger it is and not just see things as a work out…………………

  5. The Bible says, “God does not show favoritism” (Acts 10:34). And in the Bible, it tells us we can get our healing in one of two ways: in the Church or by the gift of healing from the Holy Spirit. In the church…. God has given very specific instructions for healing in the church throughout the centuries. Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up (James 5:14-15.)

The Gift of healing. By His Holy Spirit, God gives certain people the gift or manifestation of healing, as revealed in 1 Corinthians 12:9. This may include a pastor, an evangelist, or actually “any believer”. That person can pray for you and then you can receive your healing. The gift from a pastor or evangelist is obvious but by “any believer” takes more explanation.

Jesus said to anyone who believes, “They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover” (Mark 16:18, KJV). “Any believer” is one who believes and acts on the Word of God. This means a layman in a church could have this gift. And God can use him or her to bring healing to many people. The “laying on of hands” is one of the six basic principles of the doctrine of Christ described in Hebrews 6:2 (look it up). This is a great truth neglected in many churches. “Any believer” is endowed with the gift of healing by God. The gift and power to heal does not come from a REIKI MASTER. People say they have a “gift of healing” so they are led to Reiki. They say they know they can heal so they seek additional power and instruction from the practice of Reiki. But that is incongruent with the Bible. A gift comes from God. A gift… by definition is something acquired without any effort by the recipient. Nothing else is needed. So with the gift of healing provided by the Holy Spirit…. no further instruction or power is needed by the recipient. But with reiki, the power to heal comes from a MASTER and the source of that power is unknown. The power in Reiki is not from the Holy Spirit. Do not be fooled.

  6. As Christians…. we are supposed to seek the truth and answers from our creator…. GOD. We know that Jesus is the truth, the way and the life. Jesus said, “No one comes to the Father except through me”. John 14:6 Practically speaking… if God wants us to heal… we will be healed. We must only ask him for healing, and then God will guide us to the correct source(s) for healing or perform a miracle. Sometimes God does not want us to heal because the answers for our lives are contained in the suffering or experiences we encounter during our illness. It may seem God is not compassionate, but it is just the opposite. He loves us so much that he is trying to help us to learn through illness or suffer for some reason or purpose. This means… we must pray to become enlightened and then awaken to our circumstances and situation. Thereafter, we must be able to discern the truth through our hearts.

If we are led to a medical doctor for healing… we know a doctor is a “non-spiritual” man or woman who practices a physical discipline that was developed by man. Medical Doctors are trained in their discipline through a university and then practice based upon their education, knowledge, experience, understanding and skill. Medicine is a science that attempts to prevent, alleviate and / or to cure a disease or to mantain the health of a patient through a variety of non-spiritual means. The practice of medicine is “physical” and it is not a spiritual discipline or religion. It is a science that came from God and was manifested through mankind. God manifests the science of medicine through man by endowing men (and woman) with gifts they use to heal others. These gifts are usually in the form of intelligence, dexderity, insight, etc..

On the other hand… if we seek a Reiki healing… we are led to a “MASTER” who performs a spiritual healing that emanates from an unknown power source. The “MASTER” receives his power from another REIKI MASTER…. not from a university or from God. Reiki is a hands over, no touch (non-physical), visualization techinque that attempts to alleviate pain or cure a disease by correcting the flow of life energy in a person. The original source of the Reiki power came from Mikao Usui in the late 1800’s and not from God. Although Usai was Buddist, he also studied history, medicine, Buddhism, Christianity, psychology, and Taoism. Usai developed his practice of Reiki by researching healing arts that originated in ancient Tibet more than 10,000 years earlier. He was not born with the gift of healing. All Reiki Masters can be traced back to Usui. Many teaching of Reiki still remain secret.

If we use medicine, massage, chiropractic, accupuncture, holistic therapy or herbal or vitamin therapy, we are taking a physical approach to curing or affecting a disease or condition of the body. This physical approach does not require any spiritual perspective. We are allowing another to heal use through the use of physical modalities. However, Reiki is different because it requires us to rely upon a person who does not touch us but attempts to heal us through the use of spirit. A MASTER who does not even understand where the source of the spirit exists. The source or the spirit of the MASTER is not God. Do you want to go to God or the MASTER? It is your choice.

The Bible tells us to focus on Jesus: “looking unto Jesus the author and perfected of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Heb. 12:2). New Age practices such as: auras, meditation, reincarnation, past life regression, karma, clairvoyance, psychic powers, the akashic records, the Age of Aquarius, and references that all religions are true and acceptable to God are at strong variance to the Bible. Not only that, but it appears they stand diametrically opposed to many cardinal Christian doctrines. These practices do not serve God, but rather Satan himself, who “… masquerades as an angel of light” (2 Cor. 11:14). So do not become involved in such practices that will lead you away from God and Christ. But pray to become closer to God and healed by him.

What say you???
